Any Parks and Rec fans out there? Remember the episode when Ron Swanson decides to fix everything in Andy and April’s house?

Well, this pretty much sums up how I’ve felt lately when I walk into a certain home improvement store:

A couple weeks ago, I asked someone if they sold Kreg Jigs. They had no idea what I was talking about. I said, “You know, something that helps you drill pocket holes?” He still had no idea what I was talking about.

A few months ago, I had to ask three people where to find staples for an electric stapler. The first took me to pneumatic staplers. The second just pointed in a direction. Finally, the third took me to the right place.

On another visit, I asked a man where I could find sanding discs for a power sander. He proceeded to educate me on what the different grits were and was asking me what I was doing so he could tell me what I needed. This would’ve been fine, except every sign I gave him (including a quick response to “hook and loop or adhesive?”) pointed to the fact that I knew what I was doing. Then, I watched him help a lady and her husband figure out what power sander to buy. He totally ignored the fact that the woman wanted something that fit in her hand and kept emphasizing warranties. All she wanted to do was scuff up paneling so that she could paint it. I wanted to point out that if she’s going to be using it on a wall, she probably won’t really hold it in the palm of her hand, so she didn’t need to worry about the size so much as the weight. But I didn’t want to be a know it all. I spend too much time being one already.

By the way, I ended up buying the Kreg Jig at Woodcraft, which is well-stocked with both woodworking supplies and helpful salesmen.

I’m majorly frustrated with the quality of service at these big box home stores. I read somewhere that Home Depot was trying to make their store more female-friendly by carrying Martha Stewart home items. Some Ace Hardware stores were “brightening up” a couple isles and selling more things like scented candles. Are they going to start selling Tampons too? I can buy patio furniture and scented candles from Target. When I go to a home improvement store or a hardware store, I want to talk to someone who knows how to complete a project from start to finish, and who doesn’t treat me like I’m an idiot just because I’m a girl.

Maybe I’ll just start wandering the isles of Home Depot looking for a forlorn DIY cohort, and we’ll find the stuff we need together.

Things You Should Buy on Craigslist

Well my friends, I am sad to say I will not be posting about a finished project today. I am currently in what could be described as hoarding buying mode. As in stalking craigslist for stuff I can restore/upgrade and sell at the Lucketts Spring Market. I’ll post pictures of some of those acquisitions later tonight or tomorrow. Because I’ve filled our dining room with antiques and currently have a dresser in the back of Fiona, I am trying to pull myself away from buying right now so that I can, you know, actually repair/refinish/paint/upholster all the projects I’ve already acquired. But I am still seeing amazing deals on craigslist, and someone needs to know about them. Because Apartment Therapy’s craigslist roundup is not cuttin’ it these days. So here are some listings I want to hit up but can’t right now on account of my self-imposed buying stop: Retro […]

Project Updates

Hey friends! Wow — I owe a big THANK YOU to Miss Mustard Seed because her Furniture Feature Friday sent a ton of traffic to the desk I posted last week. If you found this blog from her lovely site, I’m very glad to have you! This weekend I wrapped up work on a project that has been a long time coming, and made it just in time for the Superbowl party my roommates want to host this weekend. I’m just waiting on some hardware to finish ‘er off. Which should come today. Yay! Not surprisingly, the hardware is from Anthropologie. I got it on sale, so I was able to keep the very pretty knobs to $3/piece (plus shipping). This purchase will involve a return (and trip to the Anthropologie store, double yay!) because I couldn’t decide which hardware I wanted. I’m incredibly indecisive, so I use this strategy […]

Handy Girl Shout Out: She Built a Boat!

Today I’d like to give a shout out to another handy 20 something and a pretty bad ass chick who is, well, frankly, a bit more bold than I am in her handy endeavours. A few months ago my friend Roxie decided she was going to build a row boat…and much like anything else she tries in her life…she did it. In two months, just in time to enjoy it for the summer. And yes, it floats. HOW did she build a boat, you ask?? Lucky for you she wrote an entire blog about her boat-building experience so that you can see why she decided to build it, how she got started, her materials, child labor, the big reveal, etc. Roxie was nice enough to invite me to her boat revealing party Saturday evening, which basically consisted of a few of us renting some additional river vessels from Jack’s Boathouse, paddling around […]

A Fairy Tale I Can Believe In

Like many women across the US, I woke up this morning at the ungodly hour of 4 am and proceeded to my Royal Wedding viewing party. OK, it wasn’t really a party so much as hanging out with my mom on the couch while we ooo-ed and aww-ed over the outfits, hats, Will and Harry, and of course, the beautiful bride. I watched in exhaustion, taking a brief five minute nap while I awaited their step onto the balcony and the fabled kiss. Still, I have to say, it was so worth it. photo via To get some things out of the way: I loved Kate’s dress. I expected it to be a little bit more modern, but she looked amazing and classic in true Kate Middleton style. Plus, any nod to Grace Kelly is rarely a bad move. Pippa looked amazing. Not many people can pull of a dress […]

Giving Your Daytime Digs Some Style

Hi friends! Sorry for the month-long hiatus. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the office over the past few weeks and just haven’t been terribly motivated to do much else when I get home. I’ve also been drinking immature amounts of hot chocolate from my over sized mug with an identity crisis (are you sure I’m a mug? I might be a bowl) and trying to brave the arctic weather in DC. Speaking of offices, it’s nice to add a few personal touches to your office. After all, you spend 8+ hours there, so you should enjoy the setting. The girls next door to me have a lovely display of paper snowflakes and a white board on which they can display their lovely handwriting, even if it’s just a to-do list. Another girl in the office has a Paris in a bag block set on her desk. Last […]

Welcome Back

I realize it’s been a while since I posted anything here. I actually wrote something about plans for the New Year and the like, but I still don’t have the pictures for it so instead I’m updating with this measly post. Even though I told myself I wanted to post things here consistently, I haven’t so much been motivated to do so this week. Instead, I’ve spent a week reading blogs that take me on an exhausting and somewhat inspirational path through the internet, and listening to Mumford and Sons and Broken Bells and the new Decemberists Album on repeat. I do this combo reading/obsessively listening to certain music from time to time, but especially during the winter when I’m feeling especially existentialist and introspective. Oh yes, I’ve also been doing my grownup job, which is soon to involve travel to Atlanta and possibly Seattle (big smile!). I have some projects […]

Currently Loving: Fun with Old Forks and Spoons

Today, Apartment Therapy featured these ornaments made from hammered spoons, and I’m totally in love with them. After working in a Christmas store for many years, I’ve seen a lot of unusual ornaments, and I consider these unique and quite charming. The ornaments as well as other spoons that can be used as plant markers, gift tags, place markers, etc, are available on Etsy. via Apartment Therapy These spoons reminded me of a demo I had seen recently over at Brooklyn Limestone on how to make napkin rings out of old silver forks. via Brooklyn Limestone Now I find myself desperately trying to resist the urge to purchase a rubber mallet and the extremely affordable stamp set recommended by Mrs. Limestone. Not only do I LOVE the idea of taking something meant to be totally functional and giving it a new function that displays its beautiful design, who wouldn’t have fun hammering and messing […]

Just Because It’s Cute Doesn’t Mean It Works: Learning Proportion by Trial and Error

I bought this super cute end table on Craigslist over the summer and knew it would look absolutely adorable painted white.   In my opinion, it does look super cute white. My intention was to use it for a nightstand, which I currently do: Problem? It’s WAYYYY to short for my mattress. Actually, it’s about 10 inches shorter than the mattress. I should’ve know that both this table and the other table I had would be way too short to be good nightstands. Fail. Lesson learned. I really need to pay better attention to the proportion of the items I buy. This is tough, and something I’ve found is really instinctual. It’s really difficult to understand how items will interact with each other when you’re viewing them individually. But a nightstand is pretty obvious – it should be about as tall as the bed. Now I’m on the hunt for […]
